Colombia and Venezuela – Group C

Venezuela surprised Colombia with a 1-0 win in the opening game of the Copa América for both teams. Tijuana’s Juan Arango started the game for the Venezuelans, playing 86 minutes before making way for Gabriel Cichero. Neither of Colombia’s Liga MX-based players started the match, but Monterrey’s Edwin Cardona came on as a sub in the 63rd minute.

The star-studded Colombian lineup was slow out of the gates and they rarely threatened Venezuela’s goal, with the Vinotinto defense playing well when needed. The Venezuelans were more threatening in the first half, with a good ball from Juan Arango to Ronald Vargas coming close to opening the scoring.

The lone goal of the game came at the hour mark, when Salomón Rondón headed the ball home to make it 0-1 for Venezuela.

Colombia tried to respond, with James Rodríguez and substitute Teofilo Gutiérrez both creating chances, but neither could finish them, with goalkeeper Alain Baroja making the saves he needed to make. Venezuela hung on for the surprise win, putting them level on points with group leaders Brazil.

Monterrey’s Alexander Mejía did not play for Colombia.
