Liga MX in the Gold Cup: United States, Game 2

us flagThe United States is one of just two teams in the Gold Cup – other than Mexico – to feature Liga MX players on their roster, and Atlas’s Greg Garza started in tonight’s match against Haiti. Fellow Liga MXers William Yarbrough (León) and Ventura Alvarado (América) did not get off the bench.

The U.S. punched their ticket to the knockout rounds with one group stage game remaining after their 1-0 defeat of Haiti moved them four points clear at the top of Group A and clinched their first-place finish.

With just one point separating the other three teams, there will still be a lot to play for on the final matchday as Haiti, Honduras, and Panama will all look to book their place in the quarterfinals.

The Haitians provided a tough test for the Americans, and they had plenty of chances to score. Haiti had the first dangerous chance of the game, hitting the woodwork from a free kick early in the first half. The U.S. had 64% of the possession, but Haiti outshot them 21 to 6. Luckily for the U.S., only four of those 21 shots were on target, and goalkeeper Brad Guzan performed well when called upon.

Clint Dempsey, who scored a brace in the first group stage game, once again provided the game-winner for the United States when he scored just after halftime. The U.S. was unable to build on that goal, though, and Haiti threatened to equalize for most of the rest of the game.

In the end, the lone goal was enough, and the U.S. recorded their second straight victory in the 2015 Gold Cup.
