CONCACAF Cup: Mexico vs the U.S. – Recap and Highlights

concacaf cupMexico twice took and lost the lead before a 118th-minute strike from Paul Aguilar gave them the 3-2 victory over the U.S. in the CONCACAF Cup. The victory sends Mexico to the 2017 Confederations Cup as the CONCACAF representative.

Mexico opened the scoring early on. In the 10th minute, Oribe Peralta took the ball into the box and sent a cross in for Javier Hernández, who beat Brad Guzan to make it 1-0. It was Chicharito’s first-ever goal against the U.S.

El Tri was dominating possession and chances, but then in the 15th minute, the U.S. got back into it from a set piece. Michael Bradley swung in a free kick and Geoff Cameron met it with a powerful header to tie the game at 1-1.

Both sides had chances to take the lead, but the draw lasted through halftime. There was some excitement in the 34th minute, when a confrontation between Oribe Peralta and Brad Guzan sparked a shoving match involving the majority of both teams.

Mexico completely dominated the entirety of the second half, but despite all of their possession, they could not find a second goal. With the scoreline still 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went to extra time.

Five minutes into overtime, Oribe Peralta restored Mexico’s lead. Paul Aguilar cut the ball back towards the penalty spot, and Peralta sent the ball through Cameron’s legs and past Guzan to make it 2-1.

Once again, the U.S. fought back to equalize. Substitute Bobby Wood finished off a pass from fellow sub DeAndre Yedlin in the 108th minute to level the match once more. But just as it seemed penalties were inevitable, Raúl Jiménez pounced on a poor clearance and sent the ball back into the box for Aguilar, whose volley gave Mexico the definitive 3-2 lead.
