C16 Copa MX Review: Group 5 Game 5

copa corona mxVeracruz 1-0 Jaguares de Chiapas
Veracruz made an early goal stand up as they defeated Jaguares de Chiapas 1-0 on Tuesday night. The loss keeps Jaguares winless in the Copa MX and Chiapas will finish out the group stage playing solely for pride, as they are mathematically unable to reach the next round.

The Tiburones Rojos took the lead in the 11th minute, when Sebastián Saucedo won the ball as Jaguares tried to play out of the back and turned that turnover into a goal. Veracruz kept the pressure on after the goal, but despite coming close on several occasions, they were ultimately unable to run up the score.

Lobos BUAP 1-1 Alebrijes de Oaxaca
Lobos BUAP took a very early lead but failed to hold it as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Alebrijes de Oaxaca on Wednesday night. Lobos scored in just the 2nd minute of the game, with Guillermo Martínez sending his shot into the net to make it 1-0. The Licántropos kept up the pressure – and kept possession – for the rest of the half, taking the lead into the break.

But in the second half, Alebrijes tied the game through Juan Manuel Cavallo in the 67th minute. The striker pounded on a rebound at the edge of the box and sent his first-time strike past Sergio Arias to make it 1-1. César Valdovinos could have given Oaxaca the lead later on, but his wild shot couldn’t find the target. The draw eliminates Alebrijes from advancement but keeps Lobos BUAP in the fight for a quarterfinal spot.
