Mineros de Zacatecas vs Leones Negros – Semifinal First Leg Recap and Highlights

liga de ascensoIt’s all to play for in the second leg after Mineros de Zacatecas and Leones Negros drew 1-1 on Thursday night. First-seeded Leones took the lead but couldn’t hold it, and they will now look to finish off the job at home on Sunday.

The visiting Universidad de Guadalajara took the lead in the 16th minute, when Jorge Mora tried his luck from distance. Goalkeeper Carlos Velázquez couldn’t hold on to the ball and it slipped past him into the net.

In the 34th minute, Humberto Hernández gave up a rebound on a shot by Noé Maya, and as the loose ball was chased down a defender brought down Cardozo in the box, giving Mineros the chance to equalize from the penalty spot. Maya took the spot kick and scored it to make it 1-1.

In the second half, both teams looked for a winning goal primarily through shots from distance, with Maros Caicedo and José Ramón Partida both trying long-range efforts. Bit by bit, the game settled into a midfield battle, and neither team was able to find a second goal.

With the 1-1 draw, the second leg will be a winner-takes-all affair. Should the two teams draw again, a 0-0 or 1-1 would favor Leones Negros (due to away goals and the higher seed tiebreaker, respectively), while a draw of 2-2 or higher would advance Mineros.
