New Format Announced for Apertura 2016 Copa MX

copa corona mxThe Copa MX tournament will have a new format beginning in the Apertura 2016 season. Rather than having seven groups of four teams, distributed roughly geographically, the new format will have eight groups of three teams, which will be determined by a draw.

In pot one will be the four participating Liga MX teams with the best record from the 2015-16 season, along with the recently relegated team and the three best Ascenso MX teams; in pot two will be the next four best teams from Liga MX and Ascenso MX; and in pot three will be the remaining teams.

Teams from pot two can only be drawn into groups headed by a team from the other division; that is, the Liga MX teams must be placed into a group headed by an Ascenso MX team and vice versa. There are no restrictions on the placement of teams in pot three.

For the Apertura 2016 edition, the pots are as follows:

Pot 1: León, América, Toluca, Monarcas Morelia, Dorados de Sinaloa, Leones Negros, FC Juárez, Cafetaleros de Tapachula.

Pot 2: Chivas de Guadalajara, Puebla, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul, Atlante, Lobos BUAP, Mineroz de Zacatecas, Alebrijes de Oaxaca.

Pot 3: Querétaro, Jaguares de Chiapas, Veracruz, Tijuana, Celaya, Murciélagos, Coras Tepic, Venados.

The draw will be held on June 7th.

I wish they’d switch it to a straight knockout competition. Groups of 3 suck, although its less taxing on the players this way I suppose.
