Tijuana vs Monarcas Morelia – 10:00 PM – Azteca América
The Apertura 2016 season kicks off with Tijuana hosting Monarcas Morelia. The Xolos, normally very good on their home ground, with both the artificial turf and the vociferous crowd contributing to their home-field advantage, failed to win a single league game in the Estadio Caliente in the Clausura 2016 season. Tijuana will not want that winless streak to extend into the new season, and their fans will also be impatient for a victory.
Tijuana’s struggles last season saw them drop to 16th in the Tabla de Cociente that controls relegation while, five points below them, Monarcas Morelia sits 17th. Although no one will be relegated until the end of the Clausura 2017 season, this game can nevertheless be viewed as a (very early) relegation six-pointer.
Morelia had a very good Apertura season, amassing 28 points and making the playoffs, but poor previous seasons, including a disastrous Apertura 2014 where they earned just 10 points, have dragged them down the relegation standings. Morelia will be eager to make a statement in this game and contribute to Tijuana’s home woes along the way.
