A16 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxLeón 1-1 Celaya – Group 1
A last-gasp goal gave León a 1-1 draw with Celaya in the opening match of Group 1. León came out attacking, looking for a victory in the Copa MX to make up for last weekend’s painful Liga loss. However, Celaya’s defense stood firm and dealt with chances by Hernán Darío Burbano and Elías Hernández without too much difficulty.

In the second half, León came close to opening the scoring through Mauro Boselli, whose header went just wide. But it was the visitors who found the breakthrough, with Roberto Alvarado meeting a corner kick and heading Celaya in front in the 68th minute. It looked like the lone goal would stand up until Guillermo Burdisso scored the equalizer in the 90th minute. With the 1-1 draw, León and Celaya both reach one point.

Querétaro 1-2 Puebla – Group 8
Puebla earned a 1-2 away victory over Querétaro in their Copa MX opener. The Gallos Blancos had the first good chance of the game, in the 8th minute, but Andrés Rentería hit the post. Two minutes later, Puebla opened the scoring with Matías Alustiza volleying home a cross by Damián Escudero to make it 0-1. The visitors then hit the woodwork six minutes later as they looked to add to their lead.

In the second half, they found a second goal through Sergio Ceballos, whose header made it 0-2 in the 54th minute. A defensive mistake in the 59th minute allowed Querétaro back into the game, however, with Andrés Rentería finishing off a deflected corner kick to reduce the deficit to 1-2. The hosts pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and in the closing stages they put the ball in the net, but the would-be goal was disallowed. With the 1-2 win, Puebla reaches three points while Querétaro remains on zero.

Venados 0-3 América – Group 5
América put in a dominating performance en route to a 0-3 victory over Venados in their Copa MX opener. Osvaldo Martínez opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he finished off a chance at the back post, and the Águilas made it 0-2 before halftime. In the 34th minute, Carlos Darwin Quintero drove through the defense and beat the keeper to give América a comfortable lead.

Venados struggled to react, and although they did find a few chances in the second half, none of them were too threatening for Hugo González in América’s goal. Instead, the visitors put the game completely out of reach with Carlos Rosel’s goal in the 86th minute. With the 0-3 win, América reaches three points while Venados remains on zero.

Jaguares de Chiapas 1-1 Cafetaleros – Group 2
Jaguares de Chiapas took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Cafetaleros in the opening game of Group 2. José Ayoví gave the hosts the lead in the 34th minute, but in the second half Cafetaleros got back into the game.

In the 66th minute, José Ruíz was red carded, and with the man advantage it didn’t take long for Cafetaleros to find an equalizer. The tying goal came in the 76th minute, with Abraham Darío Carreño responsible for making it 1-1. However, the visitors were unable to go on to find a match winner. With the 1-1 draw, Jaguares and Cafetaleros both reach one point.
