Monarcas Morelia earned their first win of the season in emphatic fashion with a 2-4 away victory against Santos Laguna, thanks to a hat-trick by Raúl Ruidíaz. The loss keeps the Laguneros winless in the Apertura 2016 to date.
Morelia started the game off better and they opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Diego Valdés, who headed home a cross by Cristian Penilla to make it 0-1 for the visitors.
However, Santos tied the game in the 38th minute with a shot from distance from Jonathan Rodríguez.
The hosts had just three minutes to enjoy their equalizer, though, before Raúl Ruidíaz restored Morelia’s lead with his first goal of the night. The Peruvian sent a laser into the upper right corner to make it 1-2 just before halftime.
In the second half, Ruidíaz gave Morelia a buffer after combining with Diego Valdés to make it 1-3 in the 51st minute.
Santos kept pressing despite the scoreline and in the 72nd minute they pulled a goal back through captain Carlos Izquierdoz, who headed home a corner kick to make it 2-3.
But Ruidíaz struck again in the 80th minute to restore Morelia’s two-goal lead and put the game out of reach for the hosts. The michoacanos could even have run the score up further, but they were denied by the woodwork.
With the 2-4 win, Morelia reaches four points while Santos remains on one.
