Apertura 2016 Week 4 Preview: Saturday’s Games

liga mxCruz Azul vs Tijuana – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Cruz Azul (10th) drew 1-1 with Monterrey last weekend to remain both winless and unbeaten in league play this season. La Máquina have played out three straight draws and they’ve only scored one goal. They will look to improve their attacking production and finally get into the win column when they return home to the Estadio Azul for this one.

As for Tijuana (4th), the Xolos thumped Chivas de Guadalajara 4-0 last weekend to remain perfect at home. Tijuana has yet to win on the road, but they are tied for the best attack in the league and they’ve been strong defensively as well with two shutouts in three matches. They will look for another shutout win here against Cruz Azul’s misfiring offense.

Monarcas Morelia vs Atlas – 8:00 PM – Azteca America
Monarcas Morelia (8th) defeated Santos Laguna 2-4 last weekend to earn their first win of the season. They will now look for their first home win when they return to the Estadio Morelos, where they drew in their lone home game to date. Morelia has one of the better attacking records in the league and new signing Raúl Ruidíaz is creating quite an impression, with a hat-trick last weekend and a league-leading five goals in total this season. However, their defense is of some concern, with the michoacanos allowing multiple goals in all of their games to date.

As for Atlas (7th), the Rojinegros defeated Veracruz 1-0 last weekend in controversial fashion to earn their own first win of the season. Atlas is also unbeaten to date, with a pair of draws in their other matches. They will look to build on last weekend’s win to earn their first road victory, but they have struggled offensively this season with just two goals – and they haven’t scored at all outside of the Estadio Jalisco.

Tigres UANL vs Jaguares de Chiapas – 8:00 PM – Galavision
Tigres UANL (6th) beat América 0-3 last weekend to earn their first win of the Apertura. The universitarios are unbeaten to date with one win and two draws and they’ll now look for their first home victory when they return to the Volcán. Tigres is one of just two teams that has yet to concede a goal, having posted three consecutive shutouts to start the season. They were shutout themselves in two of those games, though, and they will look to continue last weekend’s goalscoring form here.

As for Jaguares de Chiapas (12th), the Chiapanecos defeated Toluca 1-0 last weekend as they also earned their first win of the Apertura. Jaguares will now look to build on that success as they look for their first win – or point – or goal – on the road. Jaguares are among the lowest-scoring teams in the league with just one goal in their first three games and they will need more production up top if they want to continue climbing up the table.

León vs Monterrey – 8:06 PM – Univision Deportes
León (18th) fell 1-0 to Pumas UNAM last weekend to remain winless this season and pointless on the road. La Fiera will look to get into the “W” column now when they return home to the Camp Nou, where they earned their lone point of the season to date. León has managed just one goal this season, though, while conceding a league-high six, and they can’t win if they can’t score.

As for Monterrey (14th), the Rayados drew 1-1 with Cruz Azul last weekend, but that draw will feel like a loss considering they failed to convert not one, but two penalty kicks in that match. Monterrey is winless this season and they haven’t been demonstrating the vibrant attacking play that saw them dominate the league last season; in fact, they’ve scored just two goals, both at home. They did score three in midweek in the CONCACAF Champions League as they dispatched Haitian side Don Bosco, and they will look to get their season on track against another struggling team in this one.

Necaxa vs Pumas UNAM – 10:00 PM – Galavision
Necaxa (15th) fell 1-0 to Pachuca last weekend to leave them winless and goalless in the Apertura 2016 to date. The Rayos need to start winning; as the newly-promoted team, they have very little margin for error in the relegation standings. Necaxa is unbeaten at home this season, though, and they will look to start turning draws into wins when they return to the Estadio Victoria in this one.

As for Pumas UNAM (3rd), the universitarios beat León 1-0 last weekend to keep them perfect at home and unbeaten overall this season. Pumas will now look for their first road win here. They are tied for the best defensive record in the league after posting three consecutive shutouts to start the season, but they have had some trouble at the other end of the field with just two goals to date and none on the road. They found their goalscoring touch in the CONCACAF Champions League in midweek, though, where they defeated W Connection 2-4.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Querétaro – 10:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Chivas de Guadalajara (13th) suffered an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Tijuana last weekend to keep them winless, pointless, and goalless on the road. Chivas will look to rebound from that when they return home to the Estadio Chivas, where they earned their lone win of the young season. But of concern for El Rebaño is their goalscoring – or lack thereof. Chivas has managed just one goal this season while conceding six.

As for Querétaro (2nd), the Gallos Blancos defeated Puebla 2-1 last weekend to remain perfect at home and unbeaten overall. They will now look for their first road win when they visit Chivas. Querétaro has had one of the better attacks this season, having scored multiple goals in all of their games to date, and they will look to continue that streak here. A win could put them top of the table pending Pachuca’s result on Sunday.
