A16 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxCelaya vs Atlante – Group 1
Celaya and Atlante are both still looking for their first win in this competition after playing out a 1-1 draw in a game that finished 10 vs 10. Celaya started the game off better and they took the lead in just the sixth minute, when Ángel Reyna sent in a cross for Hugo López, who made no mistake with his finish. The hosts had a few chances to add to their lead but they were unable to capitalize on them.

In the second half, Carlos Cauich found the equalizer for Atlante in the 79th minute. Then, Celaya went down to 10 men in the 83rd minute with the expulsion of Eduardo Palacios. But Atlante was unable to take advantage of their extra man, which they had for just three minutes before Abraham Domínguez was also sent off. Celaya thought they had won it late with a header by Jaime Ayala, but the would-be goal was disallowed for offside.

With the 1-1 draw, Celaya reaches two points while Atlante reaches one.

Lobos BUAP 1-1 Toluca – Group 6
Toluca took a very early lead but couldn’t hold it as Lobos BUAP came back for a 1-1 draw. The Diablos Rojos went ahead in just the 2nd minute of the match when Edy Brambila sent in a cross for Fernando Uribe, who sent it home at the near post to make it 0-1. Uribe nearly made it 0-2 soon afterward, but his low shot was cleared off the line by the defense with the keeper beaten.

BUAP pressed forward in search of an equalizer and they had a good chance through Marco Iván Pérez, whose header forced a good save out of the keeper. Then, in the 18th minute, Lobos tied the game through Kevin Chaurand, who finished off a corner kick to make it 1-1. There were no clear chances in the second half and the two teams settled for a point apiece.

With the 1-1 draw, Lobos reach four points while Toluca reaches one.

Murciélagos 1-1 Monarcas Morelia – Group 4
Murciélagos took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Monarcas Morelia. The result keeps both teams unbeaten in the competition, although Murciélagos are also winless. The hosts took the lead just before halftime, when Jomal Williams pounced on a loose ball in the box and sent his low shot past Yair Urbina to make it 1-0 in the 42nd minute.

But Morelia found the equalizer just minutes after the break, with David Cabrera finding the upper left corner with his shot from the edge of the box in the 49th minute. Both teams looked for a game-winner, but the game bogged down in midfield and the scoreboard didn’t move again.

With the 1-1 draw, Murciélagos reach two point while Morelia reaches four.

Mineros de Zacatecas 3-0 Venados – Group 5
Mineros de Zacatecas got their first win of the Copa MX in style with a 3-0 thumping of Venados. The first half was a goalless affair, but then Mineros scored just two minutes after the break to set the tone of the game.

In the 47th minute, Miguel Gutiérrez scored from inside the box to make it 1-0; he then added a second in the 69th to put the hosts firmly in control. Then, Leandro Navarro was sent off in the 77th minute to leave the visitors down a man and with no hope of a comeback. Mineros kept looking to run up the score and Juan Ángel Neira notched a third for Mineros in stoppage time.

With the 3-0 win, Mineros reach three points while Venados remain on zero.

Coras Tepic 1-0 Leones Negros – Group 3
A late penalty gave Coras Tepic the 1-0 win over Leones Negros, their first victory of their Copa campaign. In the 74th minute, a handball was called in the box, and substitute William Guzmán scored the PK to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Leones Negros threw numbers forward in search of an equalizer and they came as close as hitting the post, but they ultimately couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.

With the 1-0 win, Coras Tepic reaches three points while Leones Negros remain on one.
