A16 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxPuebla 2-1 Dorados de Sinaloa – Group 8
Puebla remained perfect in the tournament with a 2-1 win over Dorados de Sinaloa, who are still looking for their first point. However, they had to come from behind to do so as Dorados took the lead in the 32nd minute through Johan Mendívil. In the second half, Puebla found the equalizer through Jerónimo Amione, who scored a golazo from outside the box to make it 1-1 in the 63rd minute.

Puebla continued to press forward as they looked for a winning goal, and they found it in the 73rd minute. Franco Arizala brought the ball down with his chest and then sent his shot into the back of the net to give La Franja the 2-1 lead.

With the 2-1 win, Puebla reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.

Cafetaleros de Tapachula 0-0 Chivas de Guadalajara – Group 2
Neither team could find the breakthrough in this one as Cafetaleros de Tapachula and Chivas de Guadalajara played out a 0-0 draw. The result leaves both teams winless in the Copa MX to date. Chivas had the first chance of the game through Javier López, but José Martínez was there to make the save. Then, on the other end, Toño Rodríguez was called into action to deny the hosts in the 35th minute.

In the second half, Ángel Zaldívar had the keeper beaten but couldn’t find the target, with a defender making the block to preserve the goalless draw. Cafetaleros had a golden opportunity to win the game from the penalty spot in the 57th minute, but Abraham Darío Carreño sent the PK wide.

With the 0-0 draw, Cafetaleros reach two points while Chivas reaches one.

Veracruz 4-1 Santos Laguna – Group 7
Veracruz earned their first win of the tournament in style with a 4-1 thumping of Santos Laguna. The Tiburones Rojos opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a golazo by Julio César Furch, but Santos tied the game just five minutes later. Ronaldo Cisneros drove into the box and beat the keeper to make it 1-1 in the 25th minute.

But Veracruz retook the lead in the 32nd minute, with Furch heading home his second of the night when he met a cross by Gabriel Peñalba. Peñalba himself then made it 3-1 from the penalty spot in the 45th minute to put the hosts firmly in control of the game. Furch finished his hat-trick in the 50th minute with another header to give Veracruz the commanding 4-1 lead.

With the 4-1 win, Veracruz reaches three points while Santos remains on zero.
