A16 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxQuerétaro 2-0 Dorados de Sinaloa – Group 8
Querétaro defeated Dorades de Sinaloa 2-0 on Tuesday night to move into first place in Group 8. The hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute. Édgar Benítez got free on the left, drove into the box, and shot past the onrushing keeper only for the ball to be cleared off the line by the defense. However, the rebound fell back to “Pájaro”, who sent the ball to Patricio Rubio for the finish.

The night worsened for Dorados in the second half when Brayan de la Torre saw red for a hard foul on Dionicio Escalante. The Gallos Blancos took full control of the game with their extra man and in the 69th minute Camilo Sanvezzo made it 2-0 after showing off some nice moves in the box.

With the 2-0 win, Querétaro reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.

América 2-0 Venados – Group 5
América remained perfect in the Copa MX and became the first team to guarantee a spot in the knockout rounds with a 2-0 victory over Venados. Venados, who are still looking for their first point, let alone their first win, started the game off aggressively, but it didn’t take long for América to take control of possession.

Goalscoring chances were hard to come by, though, and it wasn’t until the 64th minute that the Águilas took the lead. Sergio Romero sent a free kick into the upper right corner to make it 1-0 for the hosts. Then, in the 80th minute, debutant Diego Pineda finished off a pass from Renato Ibarra to give América the 2-0 lead.

With the 2-0 win, América reaches nine points while Venados remain on zero.

Murciélagos 0-0 Alebrijes de Oaxaca – Group 4
Murciélagos and Alebrijes de Oaxaca are both still looking for their first win of the competition after Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw. The hosts will be disappointed with the result considering that Alebrijes went down to 10 men in the first half with the sending off of Juan Pablo Ocegueda.

Despite having an extra man, Murciélagos were unable to find the breakthrough against an Oaxaca side that was well-organized defensively. The best chance of the game came for the hosts in the second half when Xavier Barreras was one-on-one with the keeper, but his control failed him at the crucial moment.

With the 0-0 draw, Murciélagos reach three points while Alebrijes reach two.

Veracruz 1-2 FC Juárez – 10:00 PM – Group 7
FC Juárez earned a 1-2 away win against Veracruz to increase their lead at the top of the Group 7 table. The visitors took the lead early, with a goal from Édgar Mejía in the 9th minute. Soon after, Raúl Enríquez made it 0-2 with his shot from inside the box in the 17th minute.

Veracruz pulled a goal back just before halftime with a header from Adrián Luna to make it 1-2. But the Tiburones Rojos were never able to find an equalizer.

With the 1-2 win, Juárez reaches seven points while Veracruz remains on three.
