Puebla 1-1 Querétaro – Group 8
Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Querétaro in Group 8 play. Nevertheless, the result is enough to guarantee both teams a spot in the knockout rounds. In the 21st minute, David Toledo hit the crossbar, but the rebound fell for Jerónimo Amione, who headed it home to make it 1-0 for Puebla. Querétaro nearly tied it through Camilo Sanvezzo in the 31st minute, but his shot went just wide.
In the second half, the Gallos Blancos did find an equalizer. In the 52nd minute, Armando Zamorano took advantage of a poor clearance and he made it 1-1 with his low shot. Puebla then had Amione sent off in the final moments of the match, but there wasn’t enough time left for Querétaro to complete the comeback.
With the 1-1 draw, Puebla and Querétaro both reach seven points.
Toluca 4-0 Lobos BUAP – Group 6
Toluca earned their first win of the Copa MX with a 4-0 thrashing of 10-man Lobos BUAP. Despite some early chances for both teams, it wasn’t until the 26th minute that Toluca was able to open the scoring. Enrique Triverio finished off a corner kick with a right-footed shot to make it 1-0.
Then, in the 55th minute, Omar Tejeda was sent off, leaving Lobos down a goal and down a man. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until the 77th minute that the Diablos Rojos found their second goal. Sinha finished off a great ball from Gerardo Flores to make it 2-0. Then, a goal by Alexis Vega was disallowed for offside. Finally, Fernando Uribe scored a late, impressive brace, with goals in the 89th and 91st minutes, to turn the win into a thrashing.
With the 4-0 win, Toluca reaches four points while Lobos remain on five.
Cruz Azul 3-1 Leones Negros – Group 3
Cruz Azul came from behind to defeat Leones Negros 3-1 and in doing so remain unbeaten in the Copa MX to date. Meanwhile, the Universidad de Guadalajara is still winless. The visitors took the lead early, in the 12th minute, when Misael Vázquez finished off a pass from Obed Estrada to make it 0-1. But La Máquina found the equalizer in the 41st minute after Armando Nieves was called for a foul in the box. Christian Giménez converted the ensuing penalty kick to make it 1-1.
In the second half, substitute Joffre Guerrón completed the comeback for Cruz Azul with his headed goal in the 50th minute. The Ecuadorian scored again in the 59th to give the hosts a comfortable 3-1 lead. The night got even worse for Leones in the 77th minute, when Omar Arellano was red carded, but Cruz Azul was unable to run the score up further.
With the 3-1 win, Cruz Azul reaches 10 points while Leones remain on one.
León 1-3 Atlante – Group 1
Atlante scored early and held on for a 1-3 away win against León, their first victory in the Copa MX this season. The visitors opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Carlos Cauich, who finished off a through ball to make it 0-1. León had a few chances to tie the game, but Atlante took the lead into halftime.
Then, in the 48th minute, Cauich played in Paul Uscanga, who made it 0-2 for the Potros. Just a minute later, the visitors made it three, with Cauich getting on the scoresheet again after receiving the ball from a throw-in. León scored a consolation goal in the 83rd minute, with Germán Cano making it 1-3, but it was too little, too late for the hosts. Atlante’s good night was slightly spoiled by the stoppage-time sending off of Carlos Calvo.
With the 1-3 win, Atlante reaches four points while León remains on five.
