Apertura 2016 Week 7 Preview: Saturday’s Games

liga mxQuerétaro vs Necaxa – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Querétaro (7th) fell 2-1 to León last weekend to end their unbeaten start to the season. They are still unbeaten at home, however, and they’ll look to get back to winning ways here. The Gallos Blancos have one of the better defensive records in the league and they’ve only allowed one goal at home to date. They were active in the Copa MX in midweek, where they played out a 1-1 road draw against Puebla.

As for Necaxa (15th), the Rayos drew 1-1 with Tijuana last weekend to remain winless in the Apertura 2016. Necaxa needs to start winning if they ever want to move off the foot of the relegation table, but they’re in the midst of a two-game road losing streak and they’ve found goals hard to come by this season. Necaxa will be more rested than their opponent, though, as they had no midweek commitments, and they’ll look to take advantage of that to get into the W column.

Tigres UANL vs Veracruz – 8:00 PM – Univision
Tigres UANL (3rd) defeated Pachuca 4-2 last weekend to remain unbeaten at home this season. They have a two-game home winning streak going and they will look to make it three as they remain in the Volcán for a second straight week. The universitarios lost their season-long shutout streak last weekend but they still have the best defensive record in the league. They earned a win in midweek as well, a 3-1 victory over Plaza Amador in the CONCACAF Champions League.

As for Veracruz (14th), the Tiburones Rojos drew 2-2 with Toluca last weekend to remain winless in four matches. They’re winless on the road as well, with two losses and a draw, and fans’ patience is wearing thin. Veracruz will look for their first road win in this one, but they’ve been very poor in front of goal on their travels – with just one goal from three games – and that doesn’t bode well against the best defense in the league.

Atlas vs Cruz Azul – 8:00 PM – Azteca America
Atlas (8th) drew 2-2 with Chivas de Guadalajara in last weekend’s Clásico Tapatío, which kept them winless on the road this season but unbeaten in two overall. The Rojinegros will now return home to the Estadio Jalisco, where they have a two-game winning streak going. Atlas has had one of the most consistent attacks this season, with multiple goals in their last three games; they’ve only failed to score in one game, and that was on the road.

As for Cruz Azul (11th), La Máquina beat Santos Laguna 3-1 last weekend to earn their first win of the season. They’re unbeaten on the road with three draws and they’ll look for their first away win here. However, they’ve only scored once on the road and last weekend was the first time they’ve scored more than one goal in a game this season. They had another good win in midweek, though, with a 3-1 victory over Leones Negros in the Copa MX.

Pachuca vs Monterrey – 8:06 PM – NBC Deportes
Pachuca (2nd) fell 4-2 to Tigres UANL last weekend, their second consecutive road loss. However, the Tuzos are still perfect at home this season, where they have outscored opponents 9-1. Pachuca is tied for the second-best attacking record in the league and they’ll look to get back to winning ways here. They earned a 3-0 home win in midweek against Police United in the CONCACAF Champions League and they’ll look for a similar result in this one.

As for Monterrey (9th), the Rayados fell 5-3 to Pumas UNAM last weekend to end a three-game unbeaten streak. Monterrey has lost two of their three road games this season and they’ll want to show some improvement on their travels here. They conceded more goals in their last game than in their prior five games combined, and they’ll look to restore their defensive stability in this rematch of the Clausura 2016 Gran Final.

América vs Chivas de Guadalajara – 10:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
América (4th) drew 2-2 with Puebla last weekend to remain unbeaten on the road and unbeaten in three overall. However, the Águilas are winless in two at home, something they will be eager to change here in the SuperClásico. Rubens Sambueza successfully appealed his red card from last weekend, so América will have their captain available for this one. América has the second-best attacking record in the league and they will look to overwhelm their rivals, who have struggled to score this season.

As for Chivas de Guadalajara (10th), el Rebaño drew 2-2 with Atlas last weekend in the Clásico Tapatío. Having back-to-back rivalry games may take something of a toll on Chivas, but last weekend’s draw will make them even more eager to win this one. Chivas did win their last road game, but they’ve also only managed one goal in their three away games this season.

Both teams were active in the Copa MX in midweek, where América earned a 0-2 win against Mineros de Zacatecas and Chivas beat Cafetaleros 1-0.
