Tijuana remained perfect at home this season with a 1-0 win over Pumas UNAM. The victory guarantees the Xolos will remain in first place for at least another week, while the loss keeps the universitarios winless on the road this season.
The hosts started the game off better and they found the breakthrough in the 22nd minute. Gabriel Hauche ran on to a good pass from Milton Caraglio, drove into the box, and made it 1-0 with his right-footed shot.
Tijuana continued to press after that goal and they nearly had a second in the 26th minute, only for the crossbar to intervene. Then, in the 39th, Hauche came close to grabbing another goal but the Xolos were denied once again by the woodwork.
In the second half, Pumas came out determined to find an equalizer. They found their first chance after just three minutes, when Darío Verón’s attempt from a corner kick was stopped by Federico Vilar.
Meanwhile, Tijuana looked to put the game to bed and they had the ball in the net in the 61st minute; however, the offside flag went up to keep the score 1-0. Then the Xolos struck the woodwork yet again in the 68th minute, with Dayro Moreno’s header kept out by the bar.
The narrow margin kept Pumas in the game until the end, but the visitors were ultimately unable to find an equalizer. After four matches, Tijuana has yet to allow a goal in the Estadio Caliente.
With the 1-0 win, Tijuana reaches 16 points while Pumas remain on 11.
