Santos Laguna beat Pumas UNAM 3-1 on Sunday night to give them back-to-back home wins. The universitarios, meanwhile, saw their road losing streak extended to three games and their road winless streak to five.
Playing in 90-degree heat, the two teams nevertheless fought hard as they both looked to control the game. Santos had more of the ball while Pumas looked for chances on the counter, and the first good opportunity fell to the visitors.
However, Pablo Barrera was unable to capitalize on his one-on-one chance, sending his shot wide of Agustín Marchesín’s goal. Then, at the end of the half, the hosts struck to take the lead.
In the 43rd minute, Alejandro Palacios gave up a rebound and Mauricio Cejas was there to put it away. 1-0.
But Pumas responded just minutes into the second half. In the 55th minute, Jesús Gallardo sent his diagonal shot into the net to make it 1-1.
In the 70th minute, Djaniny Tavares played in Jonathan Rodríguez, who restored Santos Laguna’s lead. Two minutes later, Rodríguez had his second and the Laguneros’ third, this time from the penalty spot.
Josécarlos van Rankin was penalized for a foul on Walter Sandoval, and Rodríguez converted the penalty kick to make it 3-1 and put the game to bed.
With the 3-1 win, Santos Laguna reaches eight points while Pumas remain on 14.
