The Rayados started the scoring early after Mauricio Cuero fouled Dorlan Pabón in the box in the sixth minute. Pabón himself stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick and he converted it to give Monterrey the 1-0 lead.
Carlos Sánchez then made it 2-0 with his headed goal in the 17th minute before the unfortunate Jorge Sánchez deflected the ball into his own net to give Monterrey a commanding 3-0 lead just past the half-hour mark.
The game looked done and dusted, but Santos Laguna mustered a bit of fight and Jesús Molina reduced the deficit shortly before halftime. In the 40th minute, Molina finished off a corner kick to make it 3-1.
However, the visitors were unable to cut the deficit any further, and in the 72nd minute Monterrey restored their three-goal lead when Rogelio Funes Mori’s header found the back of the net.
Carlos Izquierdoz pulled another one back for Santos in the 79th minute, but Yimmi Chara’s 82nd minute goal made it academic.
With the 5-2 win, Monterrey reaches 13 points while Santos remains on eight.
