Pumas UNAM remained perfect at home in the Apertura 2016 with a 2-0 victory over Atlas. The universitarios have now won five straight in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, while Atlas remains winless on the road this season.
There were not too many goalscoring chances in the first half, and the most drama involving the keepers came when it appeared that Óscar Ustari would need to be subbed out after a collision left him struggling with a sore shoulder.
However, Ustari remained in the match after treatment and the game went to halftime goalless.
Pumas opened the scoring just minutes after the restart. In the 48th minute, José Madueña was called for a foul on Jesús Gallardo in the box, giving the hosts the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot. Darío Verón took the spot kick and converted it to make it 1-0.
The universitarios continued to press after that goal, and they found the second to put the game away in the 73rd minute. Pablo Barrera sent a cross in from the right and Abraham González slipped between the Atlas defenders to head the ball home and make it 2-0.
The Rojinegros were ultimately unable to muster a response as they remained winless in five overall.
With the 2-0 win, Pumas reach 17 points while Atlas remains on 11.
