Tigres UANL remained unbeaten in the Apertura 2016 with Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Cruz Azul. The result keeps La Máquina unbeaten on the road this season, but also leaves them with just one win in their last five overall.
The visitors started the game strongly as they looked to catch Tigres on the back foot. Joffre Guerrón was given a rare start and the Ecuadorian looked just as dangerous as back in the day when he wore the universitarios’ jersey. However, not even an inspired Guerrón was able to break down the best defense in the league.
What did break down was the players. The first half was interrupted repeatedly by injuries and before halftime both teams were forced to make substitutions as Javier Aquino and Francisco Silva proved unable to continue.
Ultimately neither team could find the breakthrough although the game was an intense one with chances at both ends. Tigres have conceded just four goals all season and they remained resolute in the back, with not even a pair of late red cards to Guido Pizarro and Hugo Ayala enough to allow Cruz Azul to get on the board.
On the other end, the visitors also defended well against the likes of Andre-Pierre Gignac and Ismael Sosa.
With the 0-0 draw, Tigres reach 23 points while Cruz Azul reaches 12.
