The visiting Universidad de Guadalajara had the better of the early chances, with Ismael Valdez testing Israel Villaseñor, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring. In the 20th minute, Carlos Gutiérrez sent a cross into the box and Pedro Canelo headed it home to give Puebla the 1-0 lead.
However, Leones Negros soon tied it up through Valdez, who beat Villaseñor after some good interplay with Obed Estrada and Daniel Amador to make it 1-1 in the 29th minute.
Then, just minutes into the second half, Isaác Romo completed the turnaround when he headed the ball home in the 49th minute. Leones Negros led, 1-2.
But Puebla kept pressing and in the 73rd minute they found the equalizer. Carlos Orrantia sent the ball to the far post, where Pedro Canelo was waiting to score his second goal of the night.
The Poblanos then reclaimed their lead in the 80th minute, after Damián Escudero played in Christian Bermúdez. “El Hobbit” scored to make it 3-2 and keep Puebla alive in the Copa MX.
With the 3-2 win, Puebla advances to the quarterfinals while Leones Negros are eliminated.
