La Máquina dominated the game essentially from the opening whistle, and in the 16th minute they look the lead. Adrián Aldrete sent a picture-perfect free kick into the back of the net to open the scoring with a golazo.
Ten minutes later, Joffre Guerrón was brought down by Christian López in the box and Cruz Azul had the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot. Jorge Benítez converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.
Then, just before halftime, Noé Maya was given a straight red card for a nasty foul on Ariel Rojas, leaving Mineros down a man as well as down two goals.
With the numerical advantage, Cruz Azul continued to look dangerous in the second half and in the 61st minute they made it 3-0. Benítez took the ball to the end line and drew out the goalkeeper before cutting the ball back for Guerrón to send home.
In the final moments of the game, Joao Rojas put an exclamation mark on the win with another penalty kick. Rojas drew the foul and then took the spot kick himself, converting it to make it 4-0 in the 90th minute.
With the 4-0 win, Cruz Azul advances to the quarterfinals while Mineros are eliminated.
