The game started off evenly balanced, with neither the Águilas nor the Tiburones Rojos able to control the game.
Veracruz found the first few goalscoring chances, but they were largely limited to shots from distance and none of them were overly troubling for the goalkeeper.
Then, in the 33rd minute, América took the lead from a set piece. Oribe Peralta got his head to a corner kick to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Veracruz looked for an equalizer as the balance of play remained largely even. In the 76th minute, Julio César Furch thought he had leveled the match with his powerful header, but the would-be goal was disallowed for offside.
In the end, the lone goal stood up as América held on for the victory. However, it wasn’t all good news for the Águilas as Paul Aguilar left the game with a knee injury.
With the 1-0 win, América advances to the quarterfinals while Veracruz is eliminated.
