Cruz Azul dismantled Veracruz to the tune of 5-3 in this entertaining game that finished 10 vs 9. The result extends the Tiburones Rojos’ losing streak to four games and keeps them winless on the road this season.
Despite their poor run of form, it was the visitors who opened the scoring. In the 10th minute, Gabriel Peñalba nodded on a corner kick for Matías Cahais, who headed it home at the far post to make it 0-1 for Veracruz.
Cruz Azul then seized control of the game as they looked for an equalizer. They found it in the 28th minute after Peñalba was controversially called for a handball in the box. Chaco Giménez converted the ensuing PK to make it 1-1.
Joao Rojas then gave the hosts the lead in the 38th minute, faking his way past two defenders before beating the keeper to make it 2-1.
But the lead lasted just two minutes before Veracruz equalized. Adrián Luna beat his defender and drew out Jesús Corona before sending the ball towards the back post. Juan Ángel Albín won the race to knock the ball home in the 40th minute.
The second half started at the same frenetic pace, and just a minute after the restart Joao Rojas restored Cruz Azul’s lead. La Máquina looked comfortable, particularly after Peñalba was sent off for his second yellow of the night in the 59th minute, leaving Veracruz with just 10 men.
Cruz Azul then extended their lead to 4-2 in the 63rd minute, after Veracruz conceded another penalty that Giménez once again converted.
But despite playing down a man, Veracruz managed to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the 78th minute through captain Leobardo López, which set up a frantic finish as they looked for an unlikely equalizer.
However, Jorge Benítez made it academic with his goal in stoppage time to make it 5-3. In the aftermath, Matías Cahais and Rosario Cota were both given straight red cards in the 93rd minute of play.
With the 5-3 win, Cruz Azul reaches 15 points while Veracruz remains on nine.
