América took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Monterrey on Saturday night. The result keeps the Águilas unbeaten on the road this season and unbeaten in three overall, while Monterrey remains unbeaten at home but winless in two overall.
América took the lead early on, with Silvio Romero making it 0-1 in the 14th minute. Oribe Peralta played in Romero with a pinpoint pass that left him one-on-one with the keeper; he sent his left-footed shot into the net to give the Águilas the lead.
However, Monterrey soon tied it up. In the 24th minute, Rubens Sambueza was called for a foul on Dorlan Pabón in the box, giving the Rayados the chance to equalize from the penalty spot. Pabón took the PK and converted it to make it 1-1.
In the 33rd minute, Yimmi Chara had a golden opportunity to complete the turnaround, but he skied his attempt over the bar from within the six-yard box.
Monterrey continued to press in the second half, and once again it was Chara who came close to making it 2-1. In the 59th minute, his shot from distance hit the post with Moisés Muñoz beaten.
In the end, neither team could break the deadlock as América and Monterrey had to settle for splitting the spoils.
With the 1-1 draw, Monterrey reaches 14 points while América reaches 19.
