A 95th-minute equalizer gave 10-man Cruz Azul a dramatic 1-1 draw with Monarcas Morelia. The result ended Morelia’s three-game losing streak but keeps them winless in four, while La Máquina remain unbeaten on the road this season.
Morelia came out desperate to end their losing streak and improve their perilous standing in the relegation fight. Jefferson Cuero, Raúl Ruidíaz, and Cristian Penilla generated chances in the early going but none of the three were able to apply the final touch.
On the other side of the field, Cruz Azul was also creating chances with good interplay between Aldo Leao, Joffre Guerrón, and Joao Rojas. Carlos Felipe Rodríguez made an impressive save on a shot from distance and then again on a point-blank header to keep the game goalless going into halftime.
La Máquina began to take control of the ball in the second half and as they enjoyed more possession they crept closer and closer to opening the scoring, while Rodríguez was called upon repeatedly to keep them off the board.
Then, against the run of play, Morelia opened the scoring in the 80th minute. Diego Valdés brought the ball upfield before playing in Jefferson Cuero, who finished the pass off at the far post to make it 1-0.
The game soon appeared to go off the rails for Cruz Azul, with Joao Rojas earning a pair of yellow cards back-to-back to leave the visitors with 10 men while coach Tomás Boy waved his wallet on the sideline in a clear allusion to the referees being bought.
But there was one more twist remaining as Jonathan Cristaldo finished off a 95th-minute corner kick to give Cruz Azul a dramatic draw and leave Morelia wondering just how they let the three points slip away.
With the 1-1 draw, Morelia and Cruz Azul both reach 16 points.
