Looking to put their home field advantage to good use, Cruz Azul game out attacking from the opening whistle. La Máquina soon found several chances, both in the run of play and from dead ball situations, but Tiago Volpi was alert in goal to keep the hosts off the board.
Querétaro was patient, settled in to the game, and began to create chances with attacks down the wings. Then, in the 27th minute, Camilo Sanvezzo was fouled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty kick.
Sanvezzo himself stepped up to take it and he converted it to give the Gallos Blancos the 0-1 lead.
However, Cruz Azul tied up just three minutes later as Jorge Benítez took the ball to the endline before sending it across goal for Rosario Cota to knock home.
The game went to halftime level, but two goals in as many minutes gave Querétaro the definitive advantage in the second half as Carlos Fierro netted a brace in the 55th and 57th minutes to quickly turn the game on its head.
Cruz Azul was stunned by the quick change of fortune and they were unable to orchestrate a comeback.
With the 1-3 win, Querétaro advances to the semifinals while Cruz Azul is eliminated.
