Copa MX Quarterfinals: Chivas de Guadalajara vs Alebrijes de Oaxaca

copa corona mxAn own-goal was all that separated the sides as Chivas de Guadalajara beat Alebrijes de Oaxaca 1-0 in the Apertura 2016 Copa MX quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

Alebrijes had the first chance of the night in the first minute, when Chivas lost the ball trying to play out of the back. However, Diego Martínez was unable to get past Toño Rodríguez to open the scoring.

Chivas settled into the game after that early scare, as they began to control the ball and the pace of the game. Their first dangerous opportunity came in the 15th minute, when Javier López forced a good save out of Lucero Álvarez.

Then, in the 31st minute, a set piece gave Chivas the lead. Carlos Peña battled defender Diego Calderón as the corner kick came in, and the unfortunate defender got the final touch as the ball found his own net to make it 1-0.

Alebrijes nearly tied it up just after the second half began, but Rodríguez made a good save on the header to keep Guadalajara in the lead. Like in the first half, after Oaxaca’s early opportunity, Chivas took complete control of the game.

With the 1-0 win, Chivas advances to the semifinals while Alebrijes are eliminated.
