The game started off as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams finding chances.
But Puebla’s fortunes quickly took a turn for the worse as Mauro Cejas was sent off in just the 14th minute. However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Puebla continued to press forward in search of a goal.
It took Toluca until the 79th minute to take advantage of their extra man, but they did eventually find the breakthrough. Pablo Barrientos received the ball in the box and passed it on to Fernando Uribe, who scored to make it 0-1.
Then, in stoppage time, the Diablos Rojos mounted a fast break after defending a set piece, which left Uribe and Enrique Triverio two-on-one against goalkeeper Fabián Villaseñor. As he came out to cut down the angle, Uribe slid the ball over for Triverio, who sent it into the empty net to make it 0-2.
With the 0-2 win, Toluca advances to the semifinals while Puebla is eliminated.
