Pumas UNAM earned an emphatic 8-1 victory over W Connection to book their spot in the knockout rounds of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League. Eduardo Herrera, Jesús Gallardo, and Fidel Martínez all scored braces in the rout as Pumas topped Group A.
Saúl Berjón opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he finished off a cross from Pablo Barrera at the far post. The universitarios had looked dominant up to that point and the goal only confirmed it.
Herrera found his first of the night in the 30th minute with a diving header, and then he scored just before halftime to give Pumas the 3-0 lead.
In the second half, the hosts picked up from where they had left off as Jesús Gallardo ran on to a through ball and made it 4-0 in the 55th minute.
W Connection pulled a goal back in the 60th minute through Briel Thomas, whose first-time shot from the edge of the box got past Alfredo Saldívar. Then, In the 63rd minute, a foul by Gerard Williams on Herrera gave Pumas a penalty kick, but Julani Archibald saved it to prevent Herrera from finishing up his hat-trick.
But the goal and the saved PK didn’t help W Connection turn the tide, and Pumas continued to run up the score. In the 70th minute, Gallardo scored again to make it 5-1.
José Nieto then made it 6-1 in the 78th before substitute Fidel Martínez scored a pair in the 84th and 88th minutes for the definitive 8-1 scoreline.
With the 8-1 win, Pumas reach nine points and move on to the quarterfinals while W Connection remains on one point and is eliminated.
