Monterrey remained unbeaten at home this season with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw against Toluca, but the result also leaves them with just one win in their last four matches. Meanwhile, the draw keeps the Diablos Rojos unbeaten in two.
The Rayados had their first good chance in the 6th minute of the game, when Dorlan Pabón slammed his shot against the crossbar. It was a sign of things to come as Monterrey repeatedly sent shots high, wide, and into the woodwork – everywhere but into the back of the net.
Rogelio Funes Mori had what might be the miss of the week in the 20th minute when he failed to find the target while unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box.
Then, in the 30th minute, the visitors took the lead. Jorge Benítez found Pablo Barrientos, whose initial shot deflected off Celso Ortiz and was stopped by Jonathan Orozco. But the keeper gave up a rebound and Barrientos was there to finish it off at the second attempt, giving Toluca the 0-1 advantage.
But Monterrey was able to equalize just before halftime. Pabón’s shot was deflected by the unfortunate Paulo da Silva, with the re-direction enough to wrong-foot Talavera. 1-1.
In the second half, the Rayados continued to have the better of the opportunities but they couldn’t turn chances into goals.
Yimmi Chara had the ball in the net in the 47th minute, but the would-be goal was disallowed for offside; then, Funes Mori sent his header just wide of the post. Monterrey outshot Toluca 20-10 over the course of the game, but they could not find a winning goal.
With the 1-1 draw, Monterrey reaches 18 points while Toluca reaches 21.
