Copa MX Semifinals: América vs Chivas de Guadalajara

copa corona mxIn this Copa MX edition of the SuperClásico, América and Chivas de Guadalajara drew 1-1 in regulation, with El Rebaño emerging victorious in the ensuing penalty shootout.

The game started off well for the Águilas, as Michael Arroyo gave América the lead in the 19th minute. He collected a long pass, drove into the box, got around his defender, and beat Toño Rodríguez to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Chivas immediately began pressing for an equalizer, and they had several good chances to find one.  Perhaps the best chance of the half came in the 35th minute, when Néstor Calderón’s shot from distance was heading for the top corner until Hugo González got just enough on it to tip it into the woodwork.

But El Rebaño kept pressing in the second half, and in the 69th minute, Alan Pulido leveled the game. He got the final touch on a corner kick in acrobatic fashion to make it 1-1.

The end of regulation was marred by an injury to Bruno Valdéz, who left the stadium in an ambulance, as well as a mass confrontation between the two teams that saw several yellow card handed out and Chivas’s assistant coach Omar Zarif ejected.

And then it was on to penalties. Chivas took the early advantage in the shootout, as Jair Pereira converted but Paolo Goltz skied his over the bar. Oswaldo Alanís, Renato Ibarra, Carlos Cisneros, Edson Álvarez, Ángel Zaldívar, and Rubens Sambueza then all exchanged makes to leave it 4-3 in favor of Chivas after four rounds.

Alan Pulido stepped up, knowing that a goal would put Chivas into the final – and he sent his PK into the stands to keep América’s hopes alive. But Osmar Mares was unable to send the shootout into sudden death as Toño Rodríguez made a kick-save to deny him, giving Chivas the 4-3 victory after five rounds.

With the 1-1 draw (3-4 penalty win), Chivas de Guadalajara advances to the final while América is eliminated.
