Mexico went unbeaten in the fourth round of qualifying, with five wins and a draw to top Group A with 16 points, while the U.S. posted a 4-1-1 record to top Group C with 13 points.
The top two teams in CONCACAF will now renew their rivalry as both look to take all three points from their Hex opener.
Columbus has been a difficult place for Mexico to play in World Cup qualifying. Over the past four qualifying cycles, the U.S. has won all four of their matches against El Tri there by identical 2-0 scorelines. Mexico will not want to hear the sellout crowd once again chanting “Dos a Cero” in this one.
This meeting will have added drama coming just days after Donald Trump won the presidential election. Anti-Mexico, anti-immigration rhetoric was a staple of Trump’s campaign.
All times Eastern.
