World Cup Qualifying: U.S. vs Mexico – Recap and Highlights

el triDos a cero is over. After losing four straight qualifiers by that margin in Columbus, Ohio, Mexico broke the curse with a 1-2 victory against the United States. It was the first home loss in World Cup qualifying for the USMNT since 2001.

El Tri looked the better side from the opening whistle and they came within inches of opening the scoring in the 9th minute, when Jesús Manuel “Tecatito” Corona hit the post.

Then, in the 20th minute, Miguel Layún made it 0-1 for the visitors. He pounced on a loose ball and his shot from outside the box took just enough of a deflection to beat Tim Howard.

The woodwork saved the U.S. again in the 26th minute, when Carlos Vela’s header crashed against the crossbar.

Mexico lost a bit of rhythm after Andrés Guardado was forced out of the game in the 27th minute due to injury, but the U.S. had an injury problem of their own, with goalkeeper Tim Howard being replaced by Brad Guzan in the 38th minute.

The U.S. came out fighting in the second half, and in the 49th minute, Bobby Wood found the equalizer. Jozy Altidore played in Wood, who stumbled through Mexico’s defense before beating Alfredo Talavera to make it 1-1.

Despite a few chances for both sides, it looked like the game would end in a draw. Then, in the 88th minute, Mexico won a corner kick and the eternal Rafa Márquez got his head to it to make it 1-2 for El Tri.

As Mexico looked to hold on to the lead, Carlos Salcedo was red-carded after receiving a second yellow for time wasting, which lead to a bit of a scuffle between the two teams that resulted in two additional minutes of stoppage time. But the U.S. still didn’t have enough time to make their extra man count as Mexico held on for a historic win.

With the 1-2 win, Mexico reaches three points while the U.S. remains on zero.
