Apertura 2016 Week 17 Preview: Sunday’s Games

liga mxToluca vs Santos Laguna – 1:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Toluca (8th) beat Querétaro 2-3 last time out to end a two-game winless streak and keep themselves in the playoff fight. The Diablos Rojos need a win to ensure a spot in the Liguilla, and they’ve only lost once this season while playing at the Estadio Alberto Chivo Córdoba. However, they’ve also drawn as many games there as they’ve won. They’re facing a struggling opponent here, though, and they’ll look for a statement victory.

As for Santos Laguna (16th), the Guerreros beat Jaguares de Chiapas 2-0 last time out to end a six-game winless streak. Santos has long since been eliminated from the playoff fight but they would be happy to play spoiler here. However, Santos has yet to win on the road this season, with two draws and six losses on their travels. They also have the second-worst goalscoring record in the league and are averaging less than a goal a game on the road.

Puebla vs Pumas UNAM – 7:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Puebla (11th) fell 3-1 to Necaxa last time out to end their playoff hopes. Puebla will now look to close out their season on a positive note, but they are winless at home in the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in their last three. The Poblanos will also want a win in order to strengthen their position in the relegation standings, where they are currently 14th.

As for Pumas UNAM (7th), the universitarios drew 1-1 with Monarcas Morelia last time out to keep them unbeaten in two. Pumas are in the top eight but haven’t yet locked up a playoff spot; by the time this game rolls around, they’ll know exactly what they need to do to reach the Liguilla, but regardless of other results, it’s win-and-in for UNAM. However, they’ve only won one away game this season, and that came against struggling Veracruz.
