Jaguares de Chiapas snapped a 13-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Atlas, giving them just their second victory of the season in their final game of the Apertura 2016. The loss keeps Atlas winless on the road this season.
Both teams were already eliminated from playoff contention going into this game and were playing for little more than pride. Jaguares will finish the season in last place despite tonight’s victory, which was their first under Sergio Bueno.
Despite the statistics, Jaguares looked the better team for long stretches of the first half. They created chances using the speed of Alonso Escoboza and Derley on the wings, and it was the Brazilian who gave Chiapas the lead in the 35th minute.
Jonathan Fabbro sent in a good cross and Derley was there to head it past Óscar Ustari to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
In the second half, both teams created chances as Atlas looked for an equalizer and Jaguares looked for a second goal, which would have brought them to double digits for the season. But despite the opportunities on either end, no more goals were forthcoming as Derley’s goal stood up as the game winner.
With the 1-0 win, Jaguares reach nine points while Atlas remains on 19.
