Apertura 2016 Quarterfinals Preview: Wednesday’s Games

liga mxLeón vs Tijuana – 8:30 PM – Univision Deportes
León (8th) beat Cruz Azul 2-3 late in their final regular season game to grab the final playoff spot. That win kept La Fiera unbeaten in 10, and they are also unbeaten in six at home. After losing five of their first seven games, León has not lost in league play since, overcoming that poor start to reach the Liguilla. They will now look to show they deserve to be there by taking down the superlíder. León only lost one home game in the regular season, and they will want to build up a cushion in this leg before visiting the dangerous Estadio Caliente for the second leg.

As for Tijuana (1st), the Xolos fell 2-1 to Veracruz in their last game to send them into the playoffs on the back of a two-game losing streak. Tijuana has also lost two of their last three away games. On the other hand, the Xolos finished the season tied for the best defensive record in the league and they also have one of the golden boot winners, Dayro Moreno. Tijuana was unbeatable for a good portion of the season and they will look to get back to that impressive form in this one.

In the lone regular-season meeting between these two, Tijuana beat León 2-0 in Jornada 5.

Pumas UNAM vs Tigres UANL – 10:30 PM – Univision Deportes
Pumas UNAM (6th) beat Puebla 0-3 in their last regular-season game to reach the playoffs. That victory keeps them unbeaten in three and gives them a two-game road winning streak. They are winless in two at home, however, although prior to that they posted six consecutive victories. It was actually Tigres who ended that home winning streak and Pumas will look to rectify that here. UNAM has one of the best attacking records of the playoff teams, and they averaged two goals a game at home this season.

As for Tigres UANL (3rd), the universitarios fell 1-2 to Querétaro in their final regular-season game, although their spot in the playoffs was already locked up prior to kickoff. Tigres were better on the road than at home this season, and they currently have a two-game road winning streak going. They only lost one away game in the Apertura, and they will want to build up a buffer in this leg considering their recent poor home form. Tigres are tied for the best defensive record in the league, and they were especially good on the road, where they conceded just four goals in eight matches.

In the lone regular-season meeting between these two, Tigres UANL beat Pumas UNAM 1-3 in Jornada 14.
