The michoacanos had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 19th minute, after Marco Antonio Ortiz awarded a penalty kick. But goalkeeper Manuel Gibrán Lajud went from villain – it was his foul on Raúl Ruidíaz that led to the spot kick – to hero as he saved the PK from Juan Pablo Rodríguez.
But Morelia bounced back almost instantly, with Carlos Morales opening the scoring in the 20th minute with a golazo. From the ensuing corner kick, Morales ended up with the ball outside the box; he made some space for himself and sent a blistering shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Tijuana sent on Henry Martín as they looked for another dimension in attack. The Xolos tested Carlos Felipe Rodríguez on a pair of occasions, but he made the saves both times, first on a long-distance shot and then on a volleyed attempt by Avilés Hurtado.
As time wound down, Raúl Ruidíaz ended Tijuana’s hopes of finding an equalizer when he made it 2-0 with a shot from outside the box in the 91st minute.
With the 2-0 win, Morelia reaches three points while Tijuana remains on zero.
