Chivas de Guadalajara started the season with a 2-0 win over Pumas UNAM. The universitarios have not been able to beat Chivas in Guadalajara in 34 years, and they were unable to end that streak tonight.
At first, it looked like they might. Pumas started the game looking much the better side, and they quickly strung together several chances. New signing Nicolás Castillo looked dangerous, while Javier Cortés came as close as hitting the crossbar.
However, it was Chivas who opened the scoring. In the 26th minute, Alan Pulido found Javier López, who drove into the box and shot past Alejandro Palacios to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Ten minutes later, el Rebaño made it 2-0. Ángel Zaldívar got free on the left and sent in a low cross for Alan Pulido, who swept it home to give Chivas a cushion.
Pumas came out fighting in the second half, though, and they soon reduced the deficit. Debutant Alan Mendoza sent his diagonal shot past Rodolfo Cota to make it 2-1 and give the visitors a lifeline.
Pumas came within inches of an equalizer several times as first Pablo Barrera hit the post and then Javier Cortés hit the crossbar, but they could not get past the woodwork.
With the 2-1 win, Chivas reaches three points while Pumas remain on zero.
