Clausura 2017 Week 2 Preview: Sunday’s Games

liga mxPumas UNAM vs Cruz Azul – 1:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Pumas UNAM (13th) fell 2-1 to Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend and will now look for their first win of the young Clausura season when they return home to the Estadio Universitario Olimpico. Pumas were quite hard to beat at home last season as they put together a six-game winning streak before ending the season with a loss and a draw. They will look to build up a similar winning streak starting here, and they will be encouraged by the good play they showed last weekend, even though the end result was unfavorable.

As for Cruz Azul (6th), La Máquina started the Paco Jémez era off with a 1-0 victory over Necaxa. They’ll look to keep up the momentum with an away win in this one, although they only won once on the road last season. On the other hand, they also only lost once on their travels, with six draws rounding things out. Cruz Azul will look for a more convincing road showing this season as they hope to make it back to the playoffs under Jémez’s guidance.

Toluca vs América – 5:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Toluca (1st) earned an emphatic 4-1 victory over Atlas last weekend, although the blowout scoreline was no doubt influenced by Atlas going down to 10 men in the first half. The Diablos Rojos are scheduled to return to the Nemesio Diez for this match, after several long months away for stadium renovations. They will not want to re-inaugurate their stadium with anything less than a victory here.

As for América, the Águilas did not play last weekend, with their Jornada 1 match against Jaguares rescheduled for February. América will now get their Clausura season underway with an away game, and they were unbeaten on the road in the Apertura. However, they only won two away games, with the other six all ending in draws.

Santos Laguna vs Veracruz – 7:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Santos Laguna (8th) drew 0-0 with Tigres UANL last weekend and will feel hard done by with that result considering how many times they hit the woodwork. The Laguneros will now look for their first win of the season when they return home to the Estadio Corona for this one. They had mixed results at home last season, though, where they had three wins, two draws, and three losses.

As for Veracruz (7th), the Tiburones Rojos started their season with an important 1-0 win against Querétaro. Veracruz are just hovering above Morelia in the relegation fight and they need to keep winning to remain in the first division. They were terrible on the road last season, though, where they were winless, with six losses and two draws. The Tiburones Rojos will look to bring that streak to a halt in this one.
