C17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 2-0 Venados – Group 6
In this all-Ascenso MX match up, Atlante earned a 2-0 home victory over Venados in the Group 6 opener. It took a while for the teams to find a rhythm in this one, and the opening goal came from the penalty spot. In the 21st minute, Domingo Zalazar converted the spot kick to put Atlante ahead 1-0.

Venados pushed unsuccessfully for an equalizer until Atlante scored an insurance goal in the second half. In the 67th minute, José Medina received the ball just outside the box, got past his defender, and scored a golazo to make it 2-0.

With the 2-0 win, Atlante reaches three points while Venados remain on zero.

Querétaro 3-2 Cruz Azul – Group 2
Reigning Copa MX champions Querétaro got their title defense off to a good start with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Cruz Azul. The game had started brightly for the visitors, who took the lead in just the third minute through new signing Martín Cauteruccio. However, the Gallos Blancos soon equalized through Ángel Sepúlveda, who made it 1-1 in the 10th minute. Then, in the 23rd minute, the hosts took the lead through Luis Noriega, whose shot crept in under the crossbar to make it 2-1.

Cruz Azul looked for a response in the second half, and in the 70th minute they earned a penalty kick. Gabriel Peñalba took it and converted it to put La Máquina back on level footing, 2-2. But just three minutes later, Querétaro reclaimed the lead and this time for good as Emmanuel Villa finished off a counterattack to make it 3-2.

With the 3-2 win, Querétaro reaches three points while Cruz Azul remains on zero.

América 3-2 Santos – Group 3
América came from behind to beat Santos Laguna 3-2 in the opening game of Group 3. The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when Ulises Dávila sent his free kick past Agustín Marchesín to make it 0-1. However, América equalized before halftime with Osmar Mares sending his shot in off the post in the 37th minute. Then, just five minutes later, Carlos Darwin Quintero gave the Águilas the lead with a rocket from outside the box.

In the second half, Silvio Romero made it 3-1 after he finished off a pass from Mares in the 55th minute. With the two-goal lead, América ceded some of the initiative to Santos, and the visitors took advantage of another set piece to reduce the deficit. In the 65th minute, Osvaldo Martínez sent a picture-perfect free kick into the upper corner to make it 3-2; however, Santos was unable to go on to find an equalizer.

With the 3-2 win, América reaches three points while Santos remains on zero.

León 3-0 Monarcas Morelia – Group 9
León earned a comfortable 3-0 victory over Monarcas Morelia in this Group 9 opener. La Fiera looked the better side in the first half and they took the lead in the 34th minute through Carlos Guzmán, who made it 1-0 with a powerful diagonal shot.

The score remained 1-0 until the final 15 minutes of the match, but even when the deficit was just one goal Morelia didn’t come particularly close to equalizing. Then, in the 75th minute, Fernando Navarro added an insurance goal before Carlos Peña put the game to bed after a good combination with Andrés Andrade in the 82nd minute.

With the 3-0 win, León reaches three points while Morelia remains on zero.

Dorados de Sinaloa 1-2 FC Juárez – Group 7
FC Juárez earned a 1-2 away victory over Dorados de Sinaloa in the opening game of Group 7. There were few chances in the first half, but the visitors made one of them count in the 29th minute, when Raúl Enríquez finished off a rebound to make it 0-1.

The hosts found the equalizer in the 60th minute, after the ball struck the woodwork and rebounded nicely for José García, who had an easy finish to make it 1-1. But Juárez retook the lead just three minutes after that, when Sidnei Sciola collected a good through ball and made it 1-2.

With the 1-2 win, Juárez reaches three points while Dorados remain on zero.
