La Monarquía were looking for a home win in this one, particularly after relegation rival Veracruz won earlier this weekend. They controlled possession for the majority of the first half, but they couldn’t do much to trouble Jonathan Orozco in goal.
Then, just past the half-hour mark, the visitors took the lead. Néstor Araujo converted a cross with a diving header to put Santos ahead 0-1.
Morelia was obligated to react and in the second half they threw numbers forward with intent. The hosts out-shot Santos 10-4, but they could only put three of those shots on goal.
Nevertheless, they created enough chances to ensure that one would go in, and in the 71st minute they found the equalizer in similar fashion to the Lagueneros’ opener. Emanuel Loeschbor headed home a cross to make it 1-1.
Facundo Erpen then came oh-so-close to completing the comeback for Morelia with another header, but he put his attempt just wide to leave the game level.
With the 1-1 draw, Morelia and Santos both reach five points.
