C17 Copa MX Week 2 Review: Wednesday’s Games

León easily dispatched Zacatepec 1-3 in this Group 9 match to remain perfect in the Copa MX to date. The visitors opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when Darío Burbano finished off the rebound after Carlos Peña’s header hit the crossbar. León continued to press forward after the opening goal, while Zacatepec looked for an equalizer. They came close through a free kick and then a corner kick, which was cleared off the line by Harold Isaza.

Moments into the second half, the hosts leveled the match through Emiliano Bonfigli, who made it 1-1 in the 46th minute. However, León soon retook the lead, with Carlos Guzmán finishing off a good team play to make it 1-2 in the 65th minute. Diego Novaretti then put the game out of reach in the 86th minute when his volley made it 1-3.

With the 1-3 win, León reaches six points while Zacatepec remains on zero.

Jaguares de Chiapas 1-1 Necaxa (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Jaguares de Chiapas fought back for a 1-1 draw in this Group 5 game. The result keeps Jaguares winless after two matches while the Rayos earned a road point in their debut in the competition. Necaxa took the lead just past the half-hour mark, when Claudio Riaño finished off a cross from Nicolás Maturana to make it 0-1.

In the second half, Jaguares pressed for an equalizer and they controlled the run of play, coming close to scoring on several occasions. In the 53rd minute, Christian Bermúdez hit the woodwork with his header; later, Enrique Esqueda forced a good save out of Yosgart Gutiérrez. But the third time was the charm and in the 84th minute, Bermúdez headed home the equalizer to make it 1-1.

With the 1-1 draw, Jaguares and Necaxa both reach one point.

FC Juárez 0-1 Monterrey (Group 7)
Monterrey earned a 0-1 away win against FC Juárez in this Group 7 match. The result gave the Rayados a victory in their debut in the tournament while halting Juárez’s own winning start to the competition. Despite being the away side, Monterrey started the game off better and they generated a few notable chances, primarily through Edwin Cardona and Yimmi Chara. Towards the end of the half, a slip by César Montes nearly gave the Bravos the lead, but Mauro Fernández was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

In the second half, the Rayados continued to press. First, Jonathan Cristaldo hit the woodwork and then Cardona forced Iván Vázquez into a save. However, the keeper gave up a rebound and Chara was there to bury it, making it 0-1 in the 51st minute. Juárez was unable to find an equalizer while Monterrey came close to adding to their lead but ultimately had to settle for a victory by the minimum difference.

With the 0-1 win, Monterrey reaches three points while Juárez remains on three.

Puebla 1-0 Atlas (Group 4)
Puebla remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a 1-0 victory over Atlas in this Group 4 match. The Poblanos looked better from the start and kept play in Atlas’s defensive third, but they were unable to find the breakthrough until just before halftime. In the 39th minute, Francisco Torres showed some good skill to get the ball to Federico González, who finished off the pass to make it 1-0.

Atlas improved in the second half as they held more possession and looked for an equalizer, but they were ultimately unable to do much to trouble the goalkeeper. The Rojinegros couldn’t turn possession into goals and Puebla held on for the narrow victory.

With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches four points while Atlas remains on zero.
