Clausura 2017 Week 4 Preview: Sunday’s Games

liga mxPumas UNAM vs Necaxa – 1:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Pumas UNAM (4th) beat León 0-1 last weekend with a last-second goal to give them back-to-back wins. The universitarios will now look to make it three in a row when they return home to the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Pumas haven’t scored many goals this season – just one per game – but their defense has posted two consecutive shutouts to make those goals stand up. Pumas will look to continue that good defensive record here while also becoming a bit more prolific in attack.

As for Necaxa (13th), the Rayos beat Pachuca 1-0 last weekend to give them their first win of the season. Necaxa has yet to win on the road, and they had decidedly mixed results on their travels last season, with just two victories from nine games. Goalscoring is also a concern for the Rayos as they’ve managed just one goal in their three league games to date. They did score in midweek, though, as they drew 1-1 with Jaguares in the Copa MX.

Jaguares de Chiapas vs Tigres UANL – 6:00 PM – Galavision
Jaguares de Chiapas (12th) beat Toluca 0-1 last weekend to give them their first win of the season. Both of Jaguares’ league games to date have come on the road, and they’ve both been decided by a single goal. Chiapas will now look for a more decisive victory when they play in front of their home fans for the first time this season. Their midweek Copa MX match was also a low-scoring affair, as they drew 1-1 with Necaxa. Jaguares’ good defensive record is promising, but they had by far the worst attacking record in the league last season and they will need to improve on that if they want to avoid relegation.

As for Tigres UANL (10th), the universitarios beat América 4-2 last weekend in a rematch of the Apertura 2016 final. That victory was Tigres’ first of the season, and they’ll now look to follow it up with their first away win. That game was also the first time Tigres scored this season, and they’ll hope that four-goal romp will have served to open the floodgates. They will also have the advantage of being better rested than Jaguares, as they did not have a midweek game.

Santos Laguna vs Puebla – 7:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Santos Laguna (8th) drew 1-1 with Monarcas Morelia last weekend to remain unbeaten in league play this season. They are winless in the Copa MX, however, and they suffered a 1-2 loss to Coras Tepic in that competition in midweek. They will look to get back to winning ways in front of their home fans, and the Laguneros are perfect at the Estadio Corona in league play this season.

As for Puebla (17th), the Poblanos drew 0-0 with Querétaro last weekend to earn their first point of the season. Puebla is winless in league play, though, and that is very troubling given their position in the relegation standings. They also have the most porous defense in the league with nine goals against. They need to right the ship as quickly as possible and they’ll look to build on the 1-0 win they earned against Atlas in the Copa MX in midweek.
