Atlas remained perfect at home this season with a 3-1 victory over Monarcas Morelia. The loss ends the michoacanos‘ unbeaten start to the Clausura and leaves them at the foot of the relegation standings.
The game started off perfectly for the Rojinegros, who took the lead in just the 5th minute of the match. Matías Alustiza played in Fidel Martínez, who sent his low shot into the net to make it 1-0.
Morelia was obliged to look for a response due to their tenuous positioning in the relegation fight, and they found an equalizer just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Miguel Sansores sent a cross into the box that made its way to the far post to be finished off by Rodolfo Vilchis: 1-1.
But Atlas started the second half just as well as they had the first, and they reclaimed their lead within three minutes of the restart. In the 48th minute, José Madueña sent in a cross for Jahir Barraza, who headed it home to make it 2-1.
Just minutes after that, Atlas added to their lead with another assist from Madueña. In the 52nd minute, he connected with Bryan Garnica, whose header found the left corner to make it 3-1.
The quick turnaround took the air out of Morelia’s sails, and although they kept pressing as they searched to at least reduce the deficit, no more goals were forthcoming.
With the 3-1 win, Atlas reaches six points while Morelia remains on five.
