América ended their two-game losing streak and earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Veracruz. The loss keeps the Tiburones Rojos winless on the road this season and also keeps them in the thick of the relegation fight.
The first clear chance went to the hosts in the 20th minute, as Oribe Peralta and Carlos Darwin Quintero combined well, but Melitón Hernández was there to deny the Colombian.
Then, in the 31st minute, Veracruz responded with some good passing play, as Ángel Reyna found Felipe Flores, who played in Eduardo Herrera; however, “Lalo” didn’t make good contact and the chance went begging.
Peralta then played in Renato Ibarra, who found himself one-on-one with Melitón. However, once again the goalkeeper came up big to keep the Águilas off the board.
In the second half, debutant Cecilio Domínguez threatened a goal after winning the ball away from Marcelo Alatorre, but he couldn’t put his shot on target. But in the 60th minute, Domínguez had another chance and this time he made it count, as he finished off a great pass from Ibarra with a diving header to make it 1-0.
Veracruz looked better after the goal as they went in search of a response to it. The visitors created opportunities, and Javier Orozco very nearly found the equalizer in the 70th minute, when his bicycle kick attempt went just inches over the crossbar. However, the Tiburones were ultimately unable to wrest victory away from the Águilas.
With the 1-0 win, América reaches three points while Veracruz remains on six.
