C17 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlas 1-1 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 4)
Atlas is still winless in the Copa MX after tonight’s 1-1 draw with Mineros de Zacatecas in Group 4 play. However, the result did give them their first point of the competition and considering how the game started, they will be happy to take it. In the fifth minute, Mauro Laínes saw his shot hit the post, but it then rebounded against defender Cristian Calderón and in, giving Mineros the lead with an own-goal.

Atlas reacted well to that bit of misfortune, and they pressed forward in search of an equalizer. They found it in the 33rd minute, when Christian Tabó finished off a through ball to make it 1-1. In the second half, both teams looked for a winning goal, but Miguel Fraga and Carlos Velázquez were in good form in goal to prevent either side from scoring a second.

With the 1-1 draw, Atlas reaches one point while Mineros reach two.

Veracruz 0-1 Toluca (Group 8)
Toluca remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 0-1 away win over Veracruz in Group 8 play. The Diablos Rojos started the game off well and they had their first chance in just the second minute. Rodrigo Gómez stole the ball from Jesús Paganoni as the defender tried to control it inside his own box, but goalkeeper Pedro Gallese prevented Gómez from capitalizing on the chance. Veracruz nearly took the lead themselves in the 12th minute, when Édgar Andrade’s volleyed attempt crashed against the crossbar.

In the second half, the balance of play was largely even, with neither team able to dominate. But in the 75th minute, Enrique Triverio took advantage of a defensive error to make it 0-1, and Toluca was able to hold on to that lead and claim their second straight victory in the cup.

With the 0-1 win, Toluca reaches six points while Veracruz remains on one.

Alebrijes de Oaxaca 0-1 Querétaro (Group 2)
Querétaro remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 0-1 win against Alebrijes de Oaxaca in this Group 2 match. The result keeps Alebrijes winless in this competition. The hosts looked the better side throughout the opening half, as they controlled possession and kept play in Querétaro’s defensive third. However, they were lacking a finishing touch and they did little to test Édgar Hernández in goal.

In the second half, the pattern continued, with Alebrijes outplaying Querétaro but with no end product. Then, just as it seemed like the game was destined to end in a goalless draw, Dionicio Escalante carried the ball the length of the field and laid it off for Édgar Benítez, who made it 0-1 in the 88th minute to give the Gallos Blancos the surprise late victory.

With the 0-1 win, Querétaro reaches six points while Alebrijes remain on one.

Tijuana 2-1 Correcaminos (Group 1)
Tijuana earned their first win of the Copa MX with tonight’s 2-1 victory against Correcaminos. The loss is Correcaminos’ first of the competition. The Xolos started the game off well and were dominant in the early going. Their control of the match paid off in the 14th minute, when Henry Martín’s shot from outside the box made it 1-0 for the hosts. Correcaminos was unable to react and Tijuana took the lead into halftime.

Shortly after the second half began, Yasser Corona added a second for the Xolos to put them in complete control. But the 2-0 scoreline caused Tijuana to relax, and in the 57th minute Roberto Saucedo reduced the deficit to 2-1. Then, John Requejo and Miguel Moreno were ejected in the 74th and 82nd minutes, respectively, to leave Tijuana with just nine men. Additionally, Yasser Corona suffered a hard collision that left him unconscious on the field; he left in an ambulance for further evaluation.

Despite their numerical advantage, Correcaminos was unable to find an equalizer and with the 2-1 win, Tijuana reaches three points while Correcaminos remains on three.

Monarcas Morelia 1-0 Zacatepec (Group 9)
Monarcas Morelia earned their first win of the Copa MX with a 1-0 victory over Zacatepec. The loss leaves Zacatepec winless in the competition. The hosts took the lead early on, with Cristian Penilla finding Andy Polvo with a good through ball. The Peruvian shot past the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 1-0 in the 7th minute.

Zacatepec looked for an equalizer but was unable to find one even after the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute as Sebastián Vegas received his second yellow card of the night. Goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa was called on more than once to preserve the shutout, but he made the saves he needed to as Morelia made their narrow lead stand up.

With the 1-0 win, Morelia reaches three points while Zacatepec remains on zero.
