Luis Noriega scored twice – once for each team – as Cruz Azul and Querétaro played out a 1-1 draw. The result keeps La Máquina winless in four and leaves the Gallos Blancos winless this season. New coach Jimmy Lozano wasn’t able to turn around Querétaro’s fortunes in his first game in charge, but the Gallos did at least manage to score their first goal in league play.
The hosts looked much the better side throughout the game, but they were wasteful with their chances. Tiago Volpi also came up big in goal for Querétaro repeatedly, and he was the hero of the first half for the visitors.
Then, in the 56th minute, Luis Noriega tried to cut out a cross from Joao Rojas but only succeeded in sending the ball into his own net to give Cruz Azul the 1-0 lead with an own-goal.
Querétaro began to press forward after falling behind, and little by little they began to have more of the ball as they moved their lines up the field. In the 75th minute, Noriega stole the ball from Rafael Baca and passed to Ángel Sepúlveda, who drove into the box before returning the ball to number 14. Noriega hit it first time to level the game 1-1.
La Máquina looked to restore their lead while Querétaro, satisfied with a road point, sat back to defend the draw. Cruz Azul threw numbers forward but Volpi was unbeatable and the hosts had to settle for the draw.
With the 1-1 draw, Cruz Azul reaches five points while Querétaro reaches three.
