Necaxa 1-2 Jaguares de Chiapas (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends the Rayos’ unbeaten run in the competition, while also giving Jaguares their first victory. Necaxa started the game off well, and they took the lead in just the 8th minute. Fabián Espíndola finished off a loose ball after it rebounded against the woodwork to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Jaguares didn’t properly settle into the game until the second half, and even then it took a mistake by Necaxa to allow them to get on the board. Luis Miño recovered the ball at the top of the box and sent it past Yosgart Gutiérrez to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. With the score level, the intensity of the game ratcheted up as both teams looked for a winner. Just as the game was looking destined to end 1-1, Enrique Esqueda completed the comeback for Jaguares with his 86th minute goal.
With the 1-2 win, Jaguares reach four points while Necaxa still has four.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca 0-0 Cruz Azul (Group 2)
Alebrijes de Oaxaca and Cruz Azul both remained winless in the Copa MX with a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night. The result leaves La Máquina winless in eight in all competitions and they will be ruing their missed chances after dominating much of the game. Their first chance came in the 7th minute through Martín Rodríguez, but he connected poorly and allowed the goalkeeper to scoop up the ball.
Chaco Giménez and Jorge Benítez were also sources of danger and in the 58th minute it looked like a combination between the two would finally give Cruz Azul the lead. However, Conejo tried to finish the play himself instead of passing to Chaco, and the chance went begging. Despite Alebrijes going down to 10 men in the 68th minute with the expulsion of Jonatan Hanson, Cruz Azul just could not find a final touch. They came as close as hitting the crossbar, but that was all.
With the 0-0 draw, Alebrijes and Cruz Azul both reach two points.
FC Juárez 2-1 Dorados de Sinaloa (Group 7)
FC Juárez beat Dorados de Sinaloa 2-1 to keep pace with Monterrey at the top of Group 7. The hosts controlled the game throughout the first half, and they found the opening goal in the 19th minute. Lucas da Silva scored from the edge of the box to make it 1-0; then, just two minutes later, Diego Chávez’s shot from outside the box made it 2-0 and appeared to put Juárez in firm control.
But in the second half, Dorados were able to begin to generate chances of their own and in the 51st minute Christian Lara reduced the deficit to 2-1. But after that goal, the game evened out and the visitors were unable to complete the comeback attempt, leaving them winless in this competition.
With the 2-1 win, FC Juárez reaches six points while Dorados still have zero.
Chivas de Guadalajara 1-0 Venados (Group 6)
Chivas de Guadalajara moved into first place in Group 6 with a 1-0 win over Venados. The loss keeps Venados winless – and goalless – in the Copa MX to date. Chivas controlled the game in the first half, with more chances and more possession, but the final touch was lacking. They managed to put just one shot on goal, and that was saved.
In the second half, the pattern continued, with Chivas dominating possession but unable to turn it into much of anything. Then, in the 61st minute, Rodrigo González was called for a foul on Carlos Fierro in the box and Guadalajara had a penalty kick. Néstor Calderón took the PK and put it into the upper left corner to make it 1-0 for the hosts. The night quickly got worse for Venados, who saw Sergio Pérez sent off in the 69th minute. Down a man, the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.
With the 1-0 win, Chivas reaches seven points while Venados still have zero.
