C17 Copa MX Week 5 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlas 2-1 Puebla (Group 4)
Atlas kept their hopes of advancing alive with a 2-1 win over Puebla in this Group 4 game. The Poblanos are still top of the group but are now vulnerable to losing that spot. The Rojinegros went into this game winless in Copa MX play, but they took the lead in the 18th minute. Édgar Zaldívar won the ball and played in Jahir Barraza, whose diagonal shot made it 1-0.

The hosts added to their lead in the second half, when Rodolfo Salinas finished off a corner kick to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Atlas looked in complete control, but Puebla made the final few minutes interesting after they reduced the deficit in the 85th minute, with the unfortunate Federico González scoring an own-goal to put the visitors on the board. However, Atlas was able to hold on to the lead and secure their first win of the competition.

With the 2-1 win, Atlas reaches four points while Puebla still has seven.

Zacatepec 1-3 Monarcas Morelia (Group 9)
Zacatepec ended their participation in the Copa MX with a 1-3 loss to Monarcas Morelia, their fourth straight loss in the competition. The victory puts Morelia in position to challenge León for first place in Group 9. The visitors came out looking to win and they opened the scoring in just the 5th minute. Mario Osuna played in Cristian Penilla, who got into the box and scored to make it 0-1. Jorge Zárate then made it 0-2 in the 21st minute after going one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Minutes later, Zárate assisted Gastón Lezcano, who made it 0-3.

Zacatepec attempted to rally in the second half, and they began to create some chances of their own, although they were unable to finish any. At the other end, Morelia had chances to run the score up further, but the final touch was lacking. Just before the final whistle, Alan Vidal scored a consolation goal for Zacatepec with his header to make it 1-3, but it was too little, too late.

With the 1-3 win, Morelia reaches six point while Zacatepec remains on zero.

Cruz Azul 3-0 Querétaro (Group 2)
Cruz Azul earned their first win of the Copa MX in their last group stage game with a 3-0 victory over Querétaro. La Máquina will now have to wait and see if they did enought o make the knockout rounds. Cruz Azul took the lead early on in this one, when Ángel Mena sent his shot into the left corner in the 11th minute. They then made it 2-0 before halftime when Martín Cauteruccio combined with Jorge Benítez in the 35th minute.

With Cruz Azul in control, Benítez put the game out of reach in the second half with his second goal of the night in the 69th minute. The Gallos Blancos were unable to fight back from the 3-0 deficit, although they remain top of Group 2 despite the loss.

With the 3-0 win, Cruz Azul reaches five points while Querétaro still has six.

Coras Tepic 0-5 Santos Laguna (Group 3)
Santos Laguna earned their first win of the Copa MX in style with a 0-5 thumping of Coras Tepic. The hosts had the first chance of the game in the 9th minute, but Julio Gómez’s shot hit the post. After a few more chances for each side, Santos found the breakthrough just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Ulises Dávila finished off a cross from Mauricio Cuero to make it 0-1 for the visitors.

The floodgates opened in the second half. In the 50th minute, Jonathan Rodríguez made it 0-2; then, Djaniny, who came on as a sub, made it three in the 66th minute. A penalty kick gave Santos their fourth, scored by Diego de Buen, before Osvaldo Martínez wrapped up the goleada with his shot in the 81st minute to make it 0-5.

With the 0-5 win, Santos reaches three points while Coras still has six.
